CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Travis

I was just settling into bed when Elle's call came through. The instant she told me that her house had been ransacked, all the blood drained from my head. I quickly sought out Ma Rose and told her I'd be gone for a bit.

“Elle, are you okay?” I ask upon seeing her, everything in me aching to draw her close and comfort her as best I can. But I can’t do that without crossing a line I know she doesn’t want to cross.

She nods once, but she looks so drained.

The officer extends his hand. “Officer Jones,” he introduces himself.

Nodding, I say, “Travis Blackburn.”

I stare at Elle’s face for too long, her composure visibly shaken, the voice of the officer is nothing more than a distant droning in my ears until he says, “I hear you’re her boyfriend and employer.”

I look at Elle in surprise.

Boyfriend?

Elle averts her eyes from mine and doesn't look up. "Yeah, yeah. I am," I reply to the officer.

He is holding a bright yellow paper pad, a pen in his other hand. "You're both lawyers, I see. From what we saw in the house we deduce that whoever did the breaking-in was after a document. Or some documents, whichever the case might be."

A document.

"Luckily, the intruder wasn't anywhere around when she returned home. He or she must have left in quite a hurry because it seems the person didn't have enough time to search better."

“In other words, the person might return,” I add.

The officer nods. "That's correct. It seems Elle has been working on a sketchy case lately. What can you say about this, Mr. Blackburn?"

I can't possibly say. Elle hasn't been involved in any case for months now. Or perhaps I should say a case anyone would want to steal a document on. I shake my head. "I can't pinpoint one thing the intruder wants, but I do know that Ms. Finley wants to be as far away from all of this as possible."

The man blinks twice. "Of course," he says, finally getting it. He folds the yellow paper pad back and pockets his pen. "You're right. Please drive safely now, Mr. Blackburn. If you could just bring Ms. Finley over to the station tomorrow so we could update her on our findings, or better still, she could just call."

Nodding, I say, "Yes, a call will do.”

“I appreciate your coming and taking charge, Officer Jones. Thank you very much. And I’ll come by the station tomorrow,” Elle says, her voice small but clear.

"Alright, ma'am.” Officer Jones tilts his hat. “Stay safe."

I watch Elle and her neighbor, Mrs. Hart, hug each other goodnight. "Thanks, Mrs. Hart. You have a good night now."

“I’ll try.” The old woman sighs.

Considering the way Elle looks so wearily at the woman, I can just imagine her state of mind. She probably thinks she has invited danger into the neighborhood. A few of her neighbors down the street look from afar off, too timid to step forward.

Guiding Elle by the elbow, I lead her to the car and open the door, shutting the thing behind her after she gets in.
